Should I wear socks with UGG boots?

Posted by UGG Since 1974 on

It's one of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to UGG boots: should UGGs be worn with or without socks? The truth is, real UGG boots (made from genuine Australian sheepskin) should never be worn with socks, and for very good reason.

With over forty-five years’ experience of crafting and selling the finest UGG boots, here at UGG Australian Made Since 1974, we thrive on the quality and natural benefits of our A-Grade Merino Wool, and we are committed to showing our customers just how they can too!

As a natural ventilator and insulator, our A-Grade Merino wool has soft, hollow, miracle fibres that play an integral role in the stabilising body temperature from the scorching shores of Australia to the slopes of the Swiss Alps. Wearers can best experience the magic of these fibres by allowing skin to have direct contact with the wool. This means not wearing socks with your genuine, Australian made UGGs.

True-blue Australian sheepskin, such as ours, has moisture wicking and temperature regulating properties that allow this luxurious and resilient skin to regulate its microclimate. Without direct contact to the skin, this is unachievable. The wool’s ability to regulate body temperature – in any climate – has priceless health benefits. One being that temperature regulation within the body ultimately promotes the regulation of blood pressure - a fundamental aspect of overall health and wellbeing.

The thick fibre density of our A-grade sheepskins also cushions the body – providing optimal support and evenly distributing weight on pressure points to prevent muscle strain. Wearing a sock can inhibit the wool from moulding effectively to your feet; thereby, somewhat limiting the effectiveness of weight-distribution, and decreasing support and cushioning levels.

Now, it may have been your first thought to wear socks with your UGGs to protect them from the brunt of your inevitably unpleasant foot odour. However, UGG boots were originally designed to be worn without socks for this reason. In actual fact, a key indicator of wearing genuine UGGs, is that provided your feet are always clean when you put them on, they should not smell with consistent wear. This is due to the natural fibres found within the skin itself and the moisture wicking and ventilation properties of sheepskin. Synthetic or poor quality sheepskin on the other hand, does not allow your feet to breathe in the same way, which means your boots will become smelly a lot quicker.

If you haven’t tried a pair of high quality UGG boots before, try them out as a simple solution to combat smelly feet. And the best part of our UGGs for those prone to sweaty feet? We have replaceable innersoles in all of our UGG boots, meaning that when the time comes, you can easily replace the sheepskin sole of your boots with a fresh pair of innersoles. You can find innersoles in our Care & Protection range by clicking here.

By wearing socks, we deny ourselves, to an extent, of the priceless natural properties that these fibres have to offer. However, as wearing socks is a personal preference, we recommend only wearing socks made of natural fibres such as wool or cotton, to ensure that if you do want to wear sock with your UGG boots, the synthetic fibres do not interfere with the natural fibres within the wool. But, take it from the experts. Take off the socks and indulge in the benefits of our A-Grade Merino wool.

  • I’ve never worn socks with my uggs and they have never had any bad odours with them, they are toasty warm and i just never saw the point of struggling with socks against the sheepskin to get them on…

  • I have worn different pairs of UGG boots every day since 2015! Even through Texas summers!! I have never worn socks with them and none of my boots smell stinky. I have neuropathy due to chemo treatment for 6 months and they help me to walk better with my numb toes! It’s crazy, but my feet never sweat in them! I absolutely love them!! They have been a lifesaver for me!!

  • I received the beautiful electric blue classic Uggs for Christmas. I LOVE them! I have only worn them a few times but wore socks each time! Ugggh! A friend told me not too and I just finished reading about the whole thing. I hope I didn’t ruin the insides. Very excited about trying them tomorrow sans socks! I want to get another pair soon. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THEM!!!!

  • I didn’t know not to wear socks with my Ugg’s. They smell like my stinky feet now. Can I clean them and not wear the socks? I already ordered a new pair but these are only a year old and if I can clean them I would be very happy

  • I love wearing my UGGs without socks as far as I’m concerned it’s the best way . I wear them as slippers at home and don’t need to change shoes if I run errands. Socks make my feet too hot. If they get dirty u just wash the inside. My feet r clean when u wear them so no smell

  • I have a pair of UGG thongs, which I’ve loved and have had the benefit of wearing in Hawaii (Oahu- Kailua), where I live, but the right toe piece just broke. I don’t have the receipt, but I believe I paid approximately $100 for them (they’re a size 12). Should I return them to you or can you send me another pair without doing so? They have a rubber bottom with really soft blue-grey suede straps holding one’s feet in place. Mahalo, Larry Taormina, Ph.D.; 1020 Aoloa Place, #207A; Kailua, HI 96734
